Zooba Opens in NYC and Dr Rania Al-Mashat Attends the Soft Opening

The Egyptian fast-casual restaurant ‘Zooba‘ is now serving New Yorkers our favorite Falafel and their soft opening was attended by Minister of Tourism, Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, who was present to show tremendous support to the the young men behind Zooba.
We certainly loved seeing the young men extends their success to the big apple and we loved it even more that Dr Mashat made sure to attend the opening, even have dinner with the boys, in support of Egyptian effort.
Dr Mashat highlighted the fact that opening Egyptian food chains in foreign countries comes as part of ‘People to People‘ campaign, which sheds the light on successful Egyptians who are acing it in different fields.
“Culinary arts became one of the tourist attractions for some countries. The traditional food dishes show each country’s identity. In addition, the traditional food became a part of the experience which any tourist search for,” She said.
Egyptian-American founder Chris Khalifa, along with head chef and co-founder Moustafa El Refaey, opened Zooba back in 2012. Zooba is based already in six locations in Cairo, now in NYC and soon to open in KSA.
The restaurant offers classics, as well as twists, on Egyptian street food and their menu includes local variant of falafel that are made with fava beans instead of chickpeas.
You can now pay the restaurant if you’re in New York at 100 Kenmare Street, NY.

Apparently You Need to Start Saving Up For Kahk!

Ramadan is almost over, and Eid is coming your way, meaning that Kahk Season is finally upon us! But it also means that businesses will still find their way into making money over the holidays.
One of the most well known paisteries shops in Egypt has announced the prices of their Kahk this year, and people are going nuts over their unreasonable prices!
Apparently, they had to announce this early; so people can start saving up from now.
Despite everything, I do appreciate the sense of humor of Egyptians, and here’s a glimpse of how some people are reacting to the news…
علبة الكحك فى حلوانى Le Carnaval ب 5350 و 6350 جنيه 😃 تقريبا" مرشوش عليه #كوكايين مش #سكر 😄 pic.twitter.com/c16j0NRC8f

Even though Le Carnival has proved over the years, that their quality is a top notch one. The price remains quite hefty, and it doesn’t make sense to have to pay such an amount, even if the texture of the Kahk is a good one, and it doesn’t leave any unpleasant after taste because of their premium ingredients. It is still, Way.Too.Much.
Still, I don’t think any sane person would pay this amount, especially if there are several substitutes, and very good ones as well.
For instance, Nola is offering a Kilo of Kahk and Petite Four for only 160 EGP. However, some claim that they taste more like a cookie than kahk.
There is also Dukes, who also offers premium products, and they as well, are celebrating Eid earlier this year.
Another recommendation is Sedra, this is their third year in a row to be offering excellent Kahk, it is consistent with quite reasonable prices.
The thing is there are countless of other options, but one question remains, when will businesses stop taking advantage of the holidays? It is already apparent in Ramadan, what with all the tents, Iftar set menus and expensive Sohour.
Now, they are stealing the joy of the holiday, to earn more money.
