Why the #Trashtag Challenge Should Become a Trend in Egypt

Social media challenges that go viral are often meaningless, or lacks a purpose. But this new challenge is one that should actually dominate the social media, globally and not just in the U.S.

The #Trashtag challenge is getting people from U.S to India sharing before and after photos of areas that were filled with trash, before getting cleaned. Thanks to the challenge, countless number of people are getting their hands dirty, cleaning up their neighborhood.

Even though the hashtag existed a few years back, it only took off a viral status, earlier this month when Byron Román shared a Facebook post encouraging “bored teens” to pick up litter.

He posted his own before and after photo showing a wooded area that had been filled with trash now cleaned with green garbage bags lined up on the ground.

This had indeed made a huge buzz on several social media platforms, in which thousands of people from across the globe responded to the challenge. Shares reached more than 331,000 times on Facebook and spread to other social media platforms.

An Instagram account named “trashtagchallenge” was also created; in order to share photos of the various initiatives. And it is looking OUTSTANDING!

“When teens get bored, that’s like the worst thing you can ever have — actually, any person being bored,” Román told Time magazine.

“So, I thought maybe someone will pick up the challenge and do something positive about it … We’re all in this together.”

Imagine if more teens around the globe took on this challenge. It’s not just about cleaning neighborhoods from the trash, but also about the concept of having such a positive trend going viral and encouraging the youth to do good deeds.

Along with sharing photos, social media users are enjoying participating in a challenge that is not only viral, but also serves their communities.
