We’re all familiar with sports that we see and maybe even practice on a day to day basis, whether it was basketball, football, swimming, or even Yoga! But what if I can tell you there is a new sport you’ve never heard of that is starting to rise in Cairo?
We welcome you, the sport of the century: “Slacklining”.
Slack-lining is a sport which is the basically all about the art of walking on a line that is levitated off the ground. Wipe the confused look on your face because it gets better! You might think of it as a bit off weird and maybe even imagine a few circus performers performing like a bunch of clowns on a long line.
Well that isn’t what slack-lining is! Believe it or not, it is a sport that merges several arts such as yoga, meditating, dancing, juggling, and much more. Super cool, I know right?
Slack-lining is a sport/art that is practiced all over the world but is still very new in our country. Which is why, Muhammad Sharkawy who goes by the name”SlackShark”, has come all the way from Canada to bring this new found sport to Egypt. An Egyptian citizen who was born and raised here had left the country a while back and practiced intense yoga and slack-lining in order to precisely merge both arts. He’s been here for over a year now and is beginning to slowly introduce this beautiful art.
When he first started out in Egypt, he gave a free class once a week to get the word out, and because this is no ordinary sport and requires harnessed ropes and a safe-grassy space, he initiated these classes at the well known Merry Land Park in Heliopolis. People then got word of the sport and many started attending the classes which is when he started investing in giving real classes where people pay to learn.
Best part was that it was a onetime thing in the week where you don’t pay much money to start learning something new, especially when you know there’s no other place in Cairo that will teach you this art!
When Sharkawy expanded, he began forming trips to Sinai, Fayoum, and other places to teach slack-lining but on much higher lines that require expert techniques! For those who are afraid of heights, stick to normal slacking and leave the higher lines to the pro, unless you’re up for the challenge!
Be a part of this new move and change and learn the beauty of merging many cultures and sports into one. In fact, Slack-lining is practiced by other people in Sinai who aren’t looking to expand but are living proof of how anyone can learn it and how it truly is a way of meditating and inner peace.
