Egypt takes over the presidency of the African Union
Egypt has been appointed the presidency of the African Union last Sunday, for the first time in its history.
The African Union was established back in 2002, and included 55 member states; the union was then preceded by the Organization of African Unity (OAU), that was established in 1963.
The OAU was committed to liberating African countries from colonialism and instability in the region. It also provided African countries with an official platform that discusses human rights, security, healthcare and developmental issues.
The position of chairmanship was granted to President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi during an opening ceremony of the 32nd African Summit, in Ethiopia’s Addis Ababa.
The ceremony took the theme of “Year of Refugees, Returnees and Internally Displaced People.” Seeing that it aims at discussing issues of political instability and insecurity, plus a number of topics that relate to the sustainable developments plans of the AU’s 2063 Agenda.
Foregin Minister Sameh Shoukry had attended preparatory meetings that were held prior to the summit, these securing meetings and negotiations with several African states ensured bilateral relations.
