The long awaited episode from ‘Expedition Unknown: Egypt Live‘ aired yesterday on the Discovery Channel, whereas the 2-hour live show took us on an adventure with the U.S TV presenter Josh Gates and former Minister of Antiquities Dr. Zahi Hawass.
The iconic presenters were also accompanied by the secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt, Mostafa Waziri and American TV commentator Chris Jacobs.
While adventurer and explorer Josh Gates and Egyptologist Zahi Hawass explored the deep tunnels underground; Chris Jacobs and Dr. Mostafa Waziri provided commentary.
During the show, an ancient 3,000 year-old Egyptian sarcophagus was opened on live TV, and we were taken on a journey through a Late Period site in Minya.
The site where the sarcophagus lays was discovered earlier in February 2018 by an Egyptian archaeological mission. This ‘Expedition Unknown‘ episode, is taking place in a site that a number of audiences are unaware of, was planned through a close collaboration between Egypt’s antiquities ministry and the Discovery Channel.
Such a collaboration surely can surely put Egypt back on the map as one of the top places to visit, for its rich history and culture that goes back ages ago.
“It really is one of the great playgrounds of archaeology in the world. Ancient Egyptian culture was so enduring. It went on for thousands of years. Egypt really is one of the worlds greatest open-air museums,” Gates told Fox News in an interview. “It’s a place where history is just continuing to reveal itself.”
“This has been such an amazing experience,” Gates added, after the live broadcast. “There aren’t many people who can say they’ve gone down into unexplored ancient tombs, especially with a living legend like Dr. Hawass. We were able to document spectacular artifacts and mummies and bring viewers along in real time. It was the thrill of a lifetime.”
“Never in my 50 years in archaeology have I experienced something on such a grand scale as this,” Dr. Hawass said. “The findings here are completely special and totally unique. This is what keeps me going. It is what keeps me feeling young and alive!”
