CIFF Is Now An Oscar Qualified Festival

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has awarded CIFF OSCAR qualifying film festival in the Short Film Category status, which means that soon we will get to witness our favorite CIFF films competing for a 2020 Academy Award. 

CIFF shared the great news on Instagram and wrote, “It’s a Golden Edition! CIFF becomes an Oscar-qualifying Festival. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has awarded CIFF OSCAR qualifying film festival in the Short Film Category status.”

AMPAS‘ accreditation of CIFF means that the Arab film can now compete at the Oscars which will be held next November, along with other international film festivals that include Berlin, Cannes and Venice.

This brings the Arab cinema so much pride as it can now have the chance to be presented along Hollywood’s best movies, proving the capabilities and talents of Arab filmmakers.

Producer and CIFF’s director Mohamed Hefzy commented on this achievement on the second day of CIFF 2019, saying, “We are very proud to join the list of Oscar-eligible festivals, and we thank the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for supporting the festival.”

This has surely been a great year for the industry and we can’t wait to see what next year holds for it!

AUC: Main Partner and Host of The RiseUp Summit For The First Time

For the first time, The American University in Cairo (AUC) will be the main partner and host of the one-stop-shop event connecting startups in the Middle East and Africa, with sixteen AUC faculty and alumni as speakers at the RiseUp Summit this year.

In its seventh edition, RiseUp will host the region’s top entrepreneurs, startups, investors, and creative masterminds in a three-day entrepreneurial marathon at AUC New Cairo campus. As AUC turns 100, the University is not only celebrating its century-long achievements, but also looking to the future, ushering in a new centennial of innovation and service to the community.

The summit will include talks, panels and chats; in-depth workshops and bootcamps; networking sessions with hundreds of investors; talent matchmaking events; and exclusive satellite events.

Startups from AUC Venture Lab (V-Lab), Egypt’s first university-based startup accelerator and a leading accelerator in the Middle East and Africa, will also participate in the summit. In a special booth for V-Lab, graduates of this year’s cycle will share their experiences with the attendees and highlight the impact of their ideas and businesses on the Egyptian economy.

The speaker line-up will feature many international figures in various fields, including AUC faculty and alumni. Alumni and faculty members will discuss a variety of issues, including the entrepreneurial revolution in the Middle East, digital marketing, future of fintech in Egypt, IPO, sustainable technology, family businesses, digital transformation and how to start a podcast.

CIFF Partners With Saudi ‘Red Sea International Film Festival’

Cairo International Film Festival announced a partnership with the Red Sea International Film Festival to allow a team of Arab filmmakers working on a project from Cairo Films to participate in the first edition of the RSIFF.

The Red Sea International Film Festival is launching for the first time this year and will be held in Jeddah, it is set to take place from the 13th of March til the 16th.

This partnership comes in light of both festivals’ shared aim of supporting and acknowledging the work of young aspiring filmmakers, through providing them with a platform that allows them to share their work.

The winning project’s director and producer will be granted all the necessities for attending RSIFF from the registration to the travel expenses and accommodation.

In attending the festival, young filmmakers will get to show their projects to more than 150 leaders from the film industry, which is a great opportunity for international film executives to connect with the regional and local film industry.

Applications are still welcomed and encouraged to participate, registration is open until November 28 through this link.

Sharmoofers and Nesma Mahgoub Deliver a Killer Performance at the AFCON U-23 Opening Ceremony

The iconic Sharmoofers keeps proving that they can ace any challenge they face as once again the band stole not only the nation’s hearts, but also captured football fans across the globe with a mind-blowing performance at the AFCON U-23 opening ceremony.

The band gave a world-class performance that left the audience in awe, not only that, but they were also the creative masterminds behind the entire performance; from a successful collaboration with Nesma Mahgoub with her golden vocal chords, to exquisite dancers choreographed to perfection by Khadiga El Arkan, and spot on tribal costumes created by Sundos Al Ayoub. All of which resulted in a true musical masterpiece.

“This project had been extremely challenging for us; having to monitor all the little details to perfect our performance and making our beloved country proud was a milestone and a huge responsibility we were honored to carry.”

Now that Sharmoofers have unlocked an iconic milestone, they’re off to Dubai to claim another throne at a huge music festival, alongside some of Egypt’s biggest musicians, and there’s already a world tour buzz, but you’ll have to stay tuned for that!
