A Darkly Mystical Cairo Through the Eyes of a French Photographer

Published

on

Pascal Meunier is a French photographer and photojournalist based in Paris, whose work immensely focuses on the middle east and the Arab world. Meunier began his career years ago by photographing Aleppo, Syria for nine years. His work is not of a political nature, but rather he photographs his subjects and surroundings in a very mystical, sometimes eerie way. Meunier did a lot of work in Egypt, Cairo specifically; and his photographs are impeccable, instantly transferring you to a David Lynch like world, full of mysticism and dark charm:

EGYPT. Cairo. Public bathhouse. Hammam Barudiye.
The clock of the hammam Barudiye has not indicated the correct time for a long while. Its soiled paintings, its doubtful hygiene and its damaged woodworks do not attract any more the bygone customers.

Grey’s Anatomy’s Groundbreaking Episode Shows Detailed Look At Rape Kit Exam

Published

By

Grey’s anatomy latest episode “Silent All These Years” that was aired Thursday night, had received tons of praise from fans after showing an extensive detailed look at the procedure that is done to rape victims during the rape kit exam.

The episode focused on a rape victim survivor called Abby, who comes to the hospital with a scar on her face. She is taken care of by Jo who later on, discovers signs of abuse all over the patient’s body. Giving the history of Jo’s abusive relationship with her husband, she jumps to the conclusion that the woman is being physically abused by her husband.

However, the patient shortly reveals that she was attacked and raped after a night out in which drinking occurred, and for that reason, she doesn’t want to report it. Fearing the usual blaming and judgments that are usually set against rape victims.

“We all know if I do that kit, it ends up in the back of some police station, ignored for years, while I sit there wondering when the bomb will go off, waiting to see if a jury of my peers will believe a woman who wore a skirt a few inches too short, who had a few cocktails too many at a bar last night after having a fight about laundry with her husband,” Abby emotionally declared when the doctors asked her to do the kit exam.

“And you know the tequila I drank will make it my fault, and whoever did this to me, whatever he drank, that’ll be his excuse,” she added.

The revelation, her words, the pain in her eyes, all portrayed what women actually go through everyday.

fortunately, Jo was able to talk her into taking the exam, encouraging her to speak up, convincing her that what happened is and never will be her fault.

After the kit is administered, all the female doctors of Grey Sloan Memorial line the hallway of the hospital, as Abby is wheeled into surgery, silently offering their solidarity and support in what has been one of the most powerful episodes of Grey’s Anatomy.

“Making scenes like this is what Shondaland is all about,” Grey’s creator Shonda Rhimes tweeted on Friday. “So proud.”

The powerful scene of the detailed rape kit exam almost didn’t make it to the episode, Shonda Rhimes reveals that she has fought with ABC channel to keep the scene; as it is a moment that should be witnessed by all as it is n accurate treatment of sexual assault survivors.

The creators worked with RAINN, the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, in order to make the content and language of the episode as accurate and sensitive as possible; which was indeed successful and touched millions of viewers.

Nike Strikes Again With a New Inspiring Commercial

Published

Nike strikes again with yet another powerful commercial, not only did it feature strong confident women, in the hope of refuting common stereotypes that athletes face, but it also accepted them.

The commercial is actually saying yes to the stereotypes. Want to define all the dreamer women as crazy? Do it, the ad ends with, “So, if they want to call you crazy, fine. Show them what crazy can do.” Because crazy is sometimes good, it is sometimes what women need to defy rules and break barriers.

The ad is featuring superstar Serena Williams as she highlighted other fierce and iconic female athletes, and it is scheduled to air during the broadcast of the 91st Academy Awards.

The commercial featured the USWNT, Sam Gordon, Chloe Kim, Ibtihaj Muhammad and Simone Biles, and Williams for the narration; urging women all over the world to “Dream Crazier.”

The Nike commercial is already going viral online. In just the first hour on Twitter, the post garnered over 9,200 likes and 4,100 retweets.

And over the 4 millions views on Instagram in the first 4 hours!

One of the highlights of ad is also the featuring of a hijab woman, it’s definitely not the first time for Nike to include Muslims but it still deserves the attention.

As a feminist myself, I have loved everything about the commercial. How the narration said one thing and the footage refuted the claim.

It expressed thoughts of every female athlete, and tackled gender-based issues, and that’s why Nike, once again, doesn’t fail to impress us.
